Bangladesh Environmental Lawyers Association (BELA), a non-governmental organization of lawyers, was set up in 1993 in response to a global movement to protect and conserve natural environment and promote environmental justice which have serious implications for rural agronomy based countries like Bangladesh.
Founded by Dr. Mohiuddin Farooque, BELA launched its mission in 1993 as a group of young lawyers developing techniques and strategies to accord legal protection to environment, its various natural resources and the communities dependent on them. BELA’s interventions through public interest litigation has promoted the concept of ‘environmental justice’ and contributed to the establishment of special courts to deal with environmental offences.
